What Is Borderline Personality Disorder?

Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) generally develops in most people by the time they reach early adulthood. Interacting with others becomes difficult.

People living with loved ones who are diagnosed or suspected to have BPD often describe feeling they must “walk on eggshells” around this individual as they present outbursts of anger, extreme anxiety disorder, or desperation with no real reason to feel that way.

BPD affects about two percent of the general population.

Symptoms of Borderline Personality Disorder

The symptoms commonly associated with Borderline Personality Disorder include difficulties regulating emotions and thoughts, and presenting impulsive and erratic behaviour. In addition, those with BPD may feel a sense of vulnerability and fear of being rejected by others, and often have unstable relationships.

Individuals with BPD may also engage in self-harm and in severe cases, attempt suicide.

Treatment

Your therapist will provide the tools necessary to control and suppress symptoms of Borderline Personality Disorder, in order to work towards treatment and relief of these symptoms.

Treatment involves:

  • Individual sessions: One-on-one weekly therapy sessions in order to pinpoint your symptoms.
  • Psycho-Education: Learning how to cope with your symptoms and improve your emotional reactions and coping tactics. We will coach you and work with you to develop a way to apply that knowledge to everyday situations.
  • CBT or Cognitive Behavioural Therapy: To identify the way you think, recognize dysfunctional thinking patterns, and learn how to change them.
  • DBT or Dialectical Behavioral Therapy: Helps you realize the different effects of your emotional reactions, and how to tolerate distress and effective techniques. DBT is the primary treatment for BPD.
  • Anger management techniques: To assist you in managing anger that typically comes with BPD, and to help you manage your personal relationships in a more productive, friendly, and direct way.

Here are some articles related to the treatment of BPD:

  • Radical Acceptance
  • Dialectical Worldview: Integrating the Opposites
  • Focusing on the Senses to Get Through an Emotional Crisis

At CBT Psychology for Personal Development, a Vaughan psychologist will offer a structured treatment program for people with Borderline Personality Disorder.

We use an approach based on the specifics of Dialectical Behavioural Therapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, and mindfulness meditation. This method is evidence-based and is a direct and effective approach to treating symptoms of BPD.
