Is your Anxiety Interfering with your Life?

Are you worrying too much and is difficult to stop? Do you feel anxious about different things to a point that they become overwhelming and may affect your sleep, your stomach, or your ability to stay calm in daily situations? Do you ever think about the problems so much that you are exhausted?

If your answer was ‘Yes’ to some of these questions, you might be suffering from an ‘Anxiety Disorder’. Even though it is normal to be anxious in stressful situations, being anxious most of the time to a point that it affects your daily interactions is not.

Anxiety can manifest itself in many ways. For instance, if you find yourself losing focus or not being able to concentrate, feeling irritable, restless, scared, and constantly nervous, it may indicate that you are facing overwhelming anxiety. Luckily, there are many therapy options for treating anxiety.

Psychological Symptoms of Anxiety Disorders:

  • Overthinking on a problem to the extent that it starts interfering with your work & relationships
  • Your fear and worry seems to be larger than life and out of your control
  • You feel you need more comfort and rely on overeating, alcohol, drugs or other self-destructive habits
  • You feel that you can’t relax and enjoy things that you would like to do because you have anxious thoughts about these events. For example: What if I don’t know what to say if I don’t perform well enough and then something really bad happens to me?

In addition, anxiety disorders may cause physical symptoms such as shortness of breath, heart palpitations, and insomnia.

The Physical Symptoms of Anxiety Disorders Include:

  • Rapid breathing
  • Heart palpitations
  • Sweating
  • Insomnia
  • Gastrointestinal problems
  • Wobbly legs
  • Dizziness
  • Feeling lightheaded

Anxiety disorders can be caused by a combination of stressful situations and a genetic predisposition. After the first episode is triggered, it becomes easy for anxiety to manifest again even in situations that would not warrant this response. Anxiety disorders can only be diagnosed by a Registered Psychologist, Psychiatrist, or Family Physician. There are a few different anxiety disorders based on DSM-5.

Different Types of Anxiety Disorders

Please see the list below for more information on different types of Anxiety Disorders:

  • OCD-Obsessive Compulsive Behaviour
  • Social Anxiety Disorder
  • Phobias (specific and intense fears)
  • Separation Anxiety
  • Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD)
