Personality disorder treatment in Ontario

Home Antisocial Personality Disorder

What is Antisocial Personality Disorder?

Characteristics of Antisocial Personality Disorder (ASPD) include impulsive behaviours, disregard for the law and not feeling regret for dishonest actions. People with Antisocial Personality Disorder often lie, ignore the rights of others, and behave aggressively. They may not fulfil their obligations such as paying their bills, going to work, or supporting their family. They are usually unstable and hurt the people around them. They often cheat, steal and disrespect road signs. Those with ASPD have a sense of entitlement and enjoy bragging about their accomplishments and how they were able to take advantage of or manipulate others.

Features of ASPD tend to appear before age 15. As children, people that later meet the criteria for this disorder, have likely committed crimes, skipped school, used drugs, lied, behaved aggressively, manipulated others or engaged in cruelty towards animals. ASPD commonly runs in the family, and children are on the receiving end of the aggression, neglect and manipulation.

Therapy for Antisocial Personality Disorder

Although people with ASPD don’t usually seek help for their personality disorder, they may find themselves in therapy for other reasons, likely to get themselves out of trouble. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy focuses on challenging dysfunctional beliefs and teaches the clients strategies, exercises and behavioural experiments in order to acquire more socially acceptable behaviour.
