Domestic abuse therapy in Ontario

Home Domestic Abuse

People that are involved in relationships where their partner is abusive, emotionally and/or physically, have a difficult time thinking clearly because they usually feel guilty for the situation that they are in. Domestic abuse creates confusion in the minds of the abused partners or relatives causing the victim to feel uncertain about the validity of the abusive behaviour. Usually, the abuser’s intention is to put others down and make them feel worthless. This leads to the victims often not consulting until it has gone too far.

The abused partner usually requires a lot of validation of his/her feelings and empowerment in order to start thinking about taking any actions to improve their current situation.

The abusers usually come from families of origin where they witnessed abuse or have been victims themselves. They may repeat what they lived without being able to change or stop these negative cycles.

It may feel like an impossible cycle to stop but it is possible with the right support and guidance. Lots of people that were caught in abusive relationships have been able to change their situation and they are able to improve their self-esteem, self-confidence, and quality of life.

People that are victims of abuse require a lot of support, validation, and empowerment from a therapist who has a deep understanding of dysfunctional family functioning and the cycles of abuse.

Children who witness or are victims of domestic abuse suffer sometimes in silence, sometimes by acting out. Children may present behavioural problems at school and/or at home and emotional problems such as depression and anxiety disorders. A child psychologist can help children process traumatic situations (trauma therapy) and teach them ways to cope with their difficulties.

We offer treatment for the victims of abuse, the abusers (which includes anger management treatment), and for the children. We also offer couples therapy for this situation only when the abusive partner has expressed an honest intention to commit to change.
